wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure

To say Jade is displeased would be an understatement. It's not that he cares about this detention tarnishing his record, no. He doesn't really care about his record. What he does care about is how it cuts into his studying time. He had just come across a particularly fascinating snippet on the nature of death and the soul...

(And besides, those Hufflepuffs had started it with their incessant chattering. They're like a less annoying version of Saphir, and nobody had ever really objected when he hexed Saphir. And it's not like he used a serious hex; he just sealed and removed their mouths. Easily reversible, if they knew what they were doing - and knew how to use nonverbal spells.

After all, what kind of first-year doesn't know how to use nonverbal spells?)

But someone had taken offense to his hex, and now he finds himself trudging to Professor Rammsteiner's office, growing increasingly irritated at the loss of his study time. From what he's heard of detentions, they usually entail doing useless, mundane tasks easily accomplished with a little creative wandwork. He's thought about ignoring Professor Rammsteiner's orders more than once, but he's also been told that it would just lead to more detentions and thus a bigger waste of time.

Oh well. He's here now. With one last irritated sigh, he raises his hand to the door and knocks.

"Professor Rammsteiner? This is Jade Curtiss."

Do something. Bite him. Eat him. It'll be easy...

"No." Heine shuts that line of thought down, and tries to take a deep breath, but it comes in shallow. Maybe if he goes about it bit by bit, it won't be too much. After a moment he amends, "What kind of plan?"

He feels like he might have an idea of what's driving Professor Rammsteiner's erratic behaviour, but he feigns ignorance.

"Didn't you just say no?" He asks. "That's a quick change of heart, even from you."

"We're not doing anything right now." Find him. I can smell him, you know. "But if you have an idea, tell me."

It would be just a bit of what the dog wants to consume, and maybe it will only whet its appetite. Heine remembers to unclench his hands and stand up slightly straighter, but only after a moment.

Jade watches him closely, cataloguing his every move.

"We could bind him," he suggests. He doesn't want Eichel dead, he's too valuable a resource for that. "We could put him under our control."
canicide: (bluh.)

[personal profile] canicide 2016-05-19 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
Immediately, the idea rankles. Heine doesn't want control of anyone or anything but himself. Even if it's of someone like Professor Eichel, who's certainly better off under some kind of restraint, Heine... doesn't think it's a good idea. (And the dog agrees, which is concerning.)

"Isn't that what he did to you?" Heine keeps looking at Jade, then away. He's fidgety as usual—but perhaps less, as he holds himself purposefully still when he remembers to.

"Yes." There's a hint of impatience creeping into his voice again, an unspoken so what? Where Professor Rammsteiner's eyes keep darting away from his, Jade continues looking at him, steady.

"It's the only way. Unless you have other ideas?"
canicide: (nope fuck this)

[personal profile] canicide 2016-05-19 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Right now? No, he doesn't have any ideas. His mind is too full with teeth.

"Are you going now?" He just needs some time. Heine inhales, too aware of the breath coming down his throat. The dog growls as he presses fingertips into his own thigh hard enough to bruise. He fucked you, fucked you up. You can take them both. But Jade—

His mouth is dry. Heine breathes in again and tells himself, Eichel. I'll take care of him.

It's enough to appease the curse, and Heine is able to focus on Jade again with less effort than before.

"Give it a day." That's all I need.

He studies Professor Rammsteiner for a long moment, until it seems as if he's about to drop the issue.

He doesn't, though, because he can never leave well enough alone even when he ought to. "Why?"

Just what is it that weighs down so heavily on Professor Rammsteiner?

[personal profile] canicide 2016-05-19 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
We need to get to him before you do. No, he can't say that. Heine shrugs, an attempt at dismissal that's about halfway successful, since the movement is still too tight.

"He'll be expecting you today." Probably.

[personal profile] aseptic 2016-05-19 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
He lets out an irritated little noise. Does Professor Rammsteiner really think he's so gullible?

"There's more to it than that," he says, sounding all too sure of his claim.

Heine grunts, unamused, and walks towards the door to open it. He's not about to explain it to Jade, at least partially because he still isn't sure what he's going to do.

"Wait," he repeats. This time he lets the strength of the curse filter through into his voice, and he looks at Jade, steady and sure.

That's enough to give even Jade pause. Again, he feels the ghost of hands against his neck, tightening as he swallows.

"Fine," he says curtly. "I'll be back tomorrow morning."

Heine waits for Jade to leave, then shuts the door behind him. The moment he's alone, the silence sinks into him. Now that no one's there he has nothing to listen to but the dog and the scrape of its claws against the floor of the room as it paces, laughing.

Late that night, when he's sure Professor Eichel is in his room, Heine retraces a path he's beginning to remember. His wand is in its holster, but he doesn't touch it. He doesn't need it, not with his dog smiling over his shoulder.

He knocks on the door.

There are spells he has woven around his room, charms of detection and protection, wards against intruders. They wreath the walls, sinking deep into stone and mortar.

Dark Magic, they tell him, those charms he had spent so many years building up. Eichel closes his eyes and sees his old student, striding towards his room with purpose in his steps, his old ghost dogging his heels.

He remembers that ghost. Heine's curse. It stood between him and his prize, last time.

Eichel stands, snapping his book shut and clearing his desk with a wave of his hand. Another swift gesture opens the door. He greets Heine with his characteristic smile, but there's no hint of warmth in his eyes.

"Heine. You've never come to see me before."

Heine says, "Don't lie to me." Don't fucking lie to me. He steps forward, forcing his way into Eichel's room before he shuts the door after himself. Without a pause he moves towards Professor Eichel. Though he keeps his hands at his sides, there's an unavoidable sense of threat that he carries, that Eichel will feel.

His old student carries an aura of power, of menace, one that Eichel recognizes. It had been the same before.

The corners of his mouth tighten, but his smile doesn't fade. "Maybe I was unclear," he says. "Should I put it this way instead? You've never come to me of your own initiative."

What brings you here? But, he thinks, it's no coincidence that Heine had chosen tonight of all nights to come to him, especially when he knows Jade had gone to him earlier. What the two of them had discussed he doesn't know, but he's starting to wonder if he should have taken a firmer hand with Jade. It's a shame to stifle a mind like his, which is why he had stayed his hand, but he can still discipline him properly - later.

For the moment, he focuses on Heine. Legilimens, he recites in his mind, trying to catch Heine's eyes.

Heine is focused on Eichel, so focused that he doesn't even think to defend against Legilimens. But when he feels Professor Eichel within his mind it's as much opportunity as opening.

The curse is a part of him, after all, no matter how much he's tried to deny it. For a moment Eichel has free reign. Then there are footsteps behind him as he traces whatever memory he wants to find. The sound of padding feet is audible, accented with the odd clicks of something on stone floors.

It's not the first time he's delved into Heine's mind. Experience gives him knowledge, skill, and within the space of a thought he's found the memory he was after: Heine and Jade's meeting earlier on in the night.

But something's not quite right. Something echoes strangely in the memory. The sound of claws clicking against the ground, if he's not mistaken.

But why? Something settles over Eichel, then. A sense of being hunted.

The event replays for Eichel, through Heine's memory of it. Heine himself lets it happen, not blocking him.

The footsteps approach. Drawing closer and closer, they hem Eichel in. When he turns, Heine is there.

Or--not exactly. This Heine smiles, wide and with teeth, and he looks directly at Professor Eichel when he speaks.

Hey. His tone is far more light than Heine's ever is as he moves closer, closer, reaching a hand out for Eichel's shoulder. Come to play?

It has been a long time, decades, perhaps, since such a visceral feeling had washed over him. It takes him a moment to place what he's feeling. Fear.

He looks at this man who isn't his former student and doesn't say a word in response. He backs away, away from that outstretched hand, trying to slip deeper into Heine's mind, to find the thing responsible for this monster's creation.

The path is full of walls and yawning chasms, some of them originating from Jade. At least one is from Eichel. And no matter how deep he goes, the footsteps follow.

You can't fucking hide from me. This is mine. He's mine. A laugh, the heat of it tangible on the back of Eichel's neck.

Eventually, around when Heine's memories should melt into childhood, the sounds of running and hoarse laughter that have been behind Eichel catch up to him. Suddenly they're all around, swallowing him just as a period of blank darkness wraps around a young Heine who had been surrounded by other children and a smell of copper.

Now listen up. The powerful weight of its voice is stronger this time. I've got a couple of rules, for me and my master.

The deeper he goes, the more that fear presses down on him, a physical weight bearing down on his shoulders, making his steps falter. Once, he almost stumbles into one of those chasms. They're not real chasms, of course, just a representation of all the things wrong with Heine's mind, but it still sets his heart to racing, sweat beading on his brow.

He hasn't felt this alive in years.

The maze ends without warning. He barely has time to take in the smell of blood before darkness coils around him and constricts, bringing with it a fresh wave of menace.

"Name your terms," he says through dry lips, as if they're bargaining, as if they're on equal footing here.

Heine's dog laughs again; it echoes off of something in the darkness. First of all, you don't come near my master again. He's been keeping me down, you know? Makes me mad. He doesn't want to kill. Rip you open. I want to, haha, fuck. Get into your stomach. Your lungs. Haha.

From time to time a flash of pale skin or hair appears in the darkness around Eichel—someone pacing around him in a tight circle—but that's it. Nothing more is visible, even when the warm damp breath on the back of his neck becomes the brush of lips and teeth as it speaks.

I don't give a fuck like he does. He'll let me out if you try again... on him or that kid. It goes quiet for a moment, almost thoughtful, as its hands meander over Eichel's shoulders and arms to take hold of his wrists and presses against his back from behind. That wouldn't be so bad. I could taste you better.

But the boss is the boss.
Another laugh, and nails digging in so deep they're more like claws. I listen to him. And now you do, too.

The hollow feeling in the pit of his stomach grows and grows. His hands are clammy. Something breathes behind him, warm breath ghosting over his skin, but all Eichel feels is cold.

He's frozen still, in mind and body both, as the ghost - the dog - takes hold of him. He doesn't resist as his wrists are moved. The dog's claws sink into him, and still he doesn't - can't - move.

"I-- understand." The words are forced out of him, jerky and flat, by a compulsion he can't explain.

Good. The dog giggles, right into his ear, teeth catching against his skin briefly. Then I'll see you around.

Eichel is released a moment later. Heine pulls away from the Legilimens, taking a physical step back and drawing a deep breath. It doesn't take long for him to settle; the dog is still in him, chuckling to itself and looking out his eyes at Eichel with glee.

He'd heard part of the interaction, but he doesn't know exactly what had happened, so he lets the dog lead—on a short leash.

"You get it, right?" His voice comes out more roughly, while his words slur slightly together, when it's something not used to talking using his mouth. "You get it."

Heine smiles with too many teeth.
